Omega 3, 6 and 9 polyunsaturated acids are essential for our health. Our body cannot syntetize them, so we are forced to eat food that contains them. Omega 6 and 9 are no problem here, people are eating even more than they need. But omega 3 ? this is a different story. In Japan live around 120 000 000 people. Today more than 40 000 of them is 100 years old or older, that give around one 100 year old Japanese for every 1000 of them. In most European countries it's around one 100 years old citizen for 25 000. Why? There was a great crisis in Japan. People ate nearly only raw food back then, including alot of raw fish. Sea fish are one of the richest sources of omega 3. And guess what? Their cancer rate was 5 times lower than in Europe. Yes, it's no mistake - five times.
The correct proportion of Omega 3 and Omega 6 acids should be between 1:1 to 1:4. Nowadays you can buy a lot of pills with Omega 3 in drugstores. They help a little, but trust me, there is no magic - and no magic pill can replace healthy lifestyle. Ok, here comes small evidence - modern diet:
Before I explain how to fix it, a few words about symptoms of destroyed balance. Omega 3 is used by nearly every single cell in our body, so lack of them may cause almost everything. If we do not eat enough omega 3, our body starts to use omega 6 instead - and this is the source of our troubles.
How to fix such a problem? Very easily. Eat more omega 3 and less omega 6. Best (meaning worst) source of Omega 6 acids are: sunflower oil, meat, fats used to bread. Sunflower oil can be substituted with grapeseed oil - it got way better combination of low-saturated fat acids. Meat should be excluded from diet completely if possible. Fats used to bread - well, remember that they are sometimes main source of vitamin D. Sources of omega 3 - well, there is a problem. It seems that the flax seed are our only choice. Fish are not really good source, unless they are raw. Simple as this, omega 3 in fish is very unstable, cooking will destroy it in no time. Pills from drugstore do not contain enough of it. Flaxseed oil is excellent solution, but it must be really fresh - 2 weeks or less, in dark bottles, protected from light (light also can destroy omega 3). Yet it's expensive and sometimes buying such oil might be hard. Anyway, do not use it to fry. Blended flax seeds are best possible form, yet they do not taste well (at least for some of us). Additionally, they can cause light diarrhea. Besides it, flax seeds are excellent for people with stomach problem, sometimes they can completely cure stomach ulcer. They will give a lot of mucus, so eating a lot of flax seeds might block absorbtion of minerals and vitamins. To balance our body, we need to eat a lot - and I mean A LOT of omega 3 for few months (at least one), till every cell of our body absorbs enough of it. Even 100 gram of flaxseed oil or blended flax seeds - but such a dose will cause small diarrhea. You should feel effects in - literally - hours, but they will show full power in few months. They cannot be overdosed, but there is chance that you might get little fat from this impact dose. You can mix flaxseed oil (100 ml) with yoghurt (200 ml) and cottage (100 gram), in such a form it should not cause diarrhea. |
